Hackathon on ongelmanratkaisumenetelmä. Hackathonissa tunnistetaan teemaan liittyviä ongelmia, muodostetaan ryhmiä ja ideoidaan ratkaisuja ongelmiin. Hackathonissa on tarkoitus saada jotain valmiiksi.

The feeling of amazement causes pupils to expand, hairs to stand on end, shortness of breath, and a strong interest towards its cause. Would you like to amaze and be amazed?
Science is constantly producing new subjects for wonder and awe. It reveals amazing phenomena, and has a central role in solving the challenges facing mankind. The wonder of science, however, is not always transmitted, but is lost in the way it’s communicated. Sometimes it’s even seen as reducing the sense of magic in the world. Could we think of new ways to present scientific information in a more awe-inspiring way?
Are you a scientist who would like to present the information from their discipline so that also others experience the wonder? Are you a visual artist, musician, programmer or some other wizard who would like to use their skills to amaze? Are you a storyteller who would like to make the world more amazing with the right stories? Or are you just anyone who is interested in finding new ways to amaze, and who wants to eat pizza in interesting company on an October weekend? Join Octohack!

In this hackathon we are looking for ways to present research information in a way that creates an experience of amazement. According to research, the models of the mind are loosened when people are amazed, which can strengthen learning and make the information more memorable.

The Octohack event will have room for about 30 people. The participants will form teams which themselves choose what information they want to put into an amazing form and figure out how to succeed. The teams’ solutions are presented in the final seminar and the most amazing solution is determined with the help of accurate, scientific measurements and the subjective experiences of the jury. There is also a small reward! You can apply if you are of age (18 or older), interested in the topic, and ready to work with others.

The hackathon will be kicked off with a seminar where a speech will be heard about the experience of amazement and its creation mechanisms in humans. In addition, methods that can be used to measure amazement are presented as well.

What?

A Hackathon is a problem-solving method, where problems related to the theme are identified, groups are formed, and solutions to the problems are devised. The purpose of a hackathon is to finish something. The final solution can be, for example, a prototype of an application, a concept, or an audio-visual experience. The teams record their solutions on video, and present them at the end of the Hackathon

In accordance with the Hackathon tradition, each team gets to decide their work schedule and even come up with amazing things all night long!
